NL Rookie of the Year Rafael Furcal gets named on this day in Braves history.

Braves Franchise History: 1928: In exchange for $200,000 and five players, the Boston Braves transfer Rogers Hornsby to the Cubs. As part of the trade, pitchers Bruce Cunningham, Socks Seibold, Percy Jones, and infielder Freddie Maguire go to Boston along with catcher Lou Legett.

1964: The Milwaukee Braves are ordered to remain in Milwaukee for the 1965 season, despite the National League’s approval of their move to Atlanta. In 1966, the squad relocated to Atlanta.

2000: Rafael Furcal wins the National League Rookie of the Year award. Frugal was voted first place in 25 out of 32 cases.

2019: Silver Slugger Awards go to Ronald Acuña Jr., Ozzie Albies, and Freddie Freeman.

1927: The Phillies appoint former Syracuse manager Burt Shotton as their new manager, and Bill McKechnie is hired to succeed Bob O’Farrell as manager of the Cardinals.

Elston Howard of the Yankees becomes the first African American player to win the MVP award in the American League in 1963. Al Kaline of Detroit comes in second.

Orlando Cepeda of the Cardinals is only the second player in the National League to win MVP honors unanimously, having done so in 1967.

1972: Following a hit, Johnny Bench wins the National League MVP Award for the second time in three seasons.270 with 125 RBI and 40 home runs.

1978: Jim Rice defeats Yankees pitcher Ron Guidry to win the American League MVP Award. Rice became the first player to reach 400 total bases since Joe DiMaggio, and he led the AL in home runs, RBI, hits, triples, and slugging percentage. Guidry had a 1.74 ERA, 248 strikeouts, and a 25-3 record.

1979: Cubs’ final game With 37 saves and a 2.23 ERA, Bruce Sutter is named the NL Cy Young winner. Joe Niekro of Houston came in second place among voters.

1988: New managers are named by the Mariners and Astros. Jim Lefebvre will take over in Seattle, and Art Howe will assume leadership in Houston.

1989: Gregg Olson wins the American League Rookie of the Year Award, defeating Tom Gordon and Ken Griffey Jr. The first relief pitcher to receive the honor is Olson.

2012: Walt Weiss is named manager of the Rockies. Weiss had been a baseball coach in the Denver area for high school teams.

2013: The Padres bench coach Rick Renteria is hired by the Cubs to become their new manager.
