The defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers may return to the NCAA.
Pittsboro, PA Teryl Austin, the defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is one of the possible successors to head coach Syracuse University.
After failing to achieve success as the Orange’s leader, Dino Babers was fired by Syracuse. Austin is currently among the top 10 candidates to replace Babers, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
In addition, Liam Coen, Bob Chesney, Sean Lewis, Al Golden, Doug Marrone, Tony White, Bronco Mendenhall, Curt Cignetti, and Jason Candle are on the list.
Prior to being named the Steelers’ defensive coordinator in 2022, Austin joined the team in 2019 and worked as a defensive backs coach. The University of Pittsburgh alumnus played in the NCAA for twelve years, beginning in 1991 as a graduate assistant for Penn State and concluding in 2002 as a defensive assistant with Michigan.
It would be unclear who Austin would replace at this point. Additionally, the Steelers may need to look for a new offensive coordinator in the spring if they decide to part ways with Matt Canada after the season.
