ANN ARBOUR, MI With a third-straight victory over Ohio State, Michigan football rose to No. 2 in the second-to-last College Football Playoff rankings.
The Wolverines defeated the now-No. 6 Buckeyes 30-24 on Saturday to cap off another perfect regular season. Together with a victory over Penn State on the road, Michigan has one of the strongest resumes in the entire sport.
The Wolverines have five victories over teams with winning records, including victories over Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland, UNLV, and Bowling Green. The CFP committee frequently mentions these victories in its evaluations.
Michigan’s Big Ten Championship Game matchup against Iowa is this Saturday in Indianapolis. If Georgia loses to Alabama, a victory would ensure another trip to the postseason, either as the top seed or, if Georgia wins, as the second seed for the third consecutive year.
According to SP+, Iowa has the best defence in the country but the 124th-ranked offence (out of 133 teams).
Georgia is still ranked first in the CFP, mostly because of two victories over No. 9 Missouri and No. 11 Ole Miss, which are comparable to Michigan’s. The Bulldogs have also triumphed over Tennessee and Kentucky, two teams with winning records.
The final two unbeaten Power Five teams are Washington and Florida State.
In addition to three other teams with winning records—Utah, USC, and Boise State—Washington has ranked victories over No. 5 Oregon, No. 15 Arizona, and No. 20 Oregon State.
No. 13 LSU and No. 23 Clemson, along with Duke and Miami, are among the two ranked teams that Florida State has defeated.
