Iowa Punter Tory Taylor Set to Break 85-Year-Old NCAA Record—Because of Course He Is

Tory Taylor of Iowa is only 20 yards away from shattering the record for most punting yards, which dates back 85 years.

Whoa!

The record for most punting yards in a single season is 4,138, set in 1938 at Michigan State by the late Johnny Pingel. With 4,119 punting yards this season, Taylor leads the FBS. He will undoubtedly surpass that total in the Citrus Bowl, probably with just one punt.

This is simply another notch in the belt of the putrid Iowa offense, which won 10 games this season and made a Big Ten title despite fielding the worst offensive unit in the FBS. The Hawkeyes enter bowl season ranked dead last–130th in the FBS–in total offense.

As a result, after the bowl game, offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz—son of head coach Kirk Ferentz—will no longer be with the Hawkeyes.

On January 1st in Orlando, the Hawkeyes will play Tennessee in the Citrus Bowl. The game will begin at 1 p.m. ET.
