Boulder, Colorado — At a public ceremony on Wednesday, Deion Sanders was named the 2023 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year.

An event honoring the head football coach at the University of Colorado was organized by Amazon Prime Video.

At the CU Events Center in Boulder on Wednesday night, in front of thousands of CU supporters, Coach Prime accepted the 2023 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year award.

“I think it means impact,” Sanders told 9NEWS when asked about the award. “Having total impact of the entirety of the whole thought process. I mean it’s not just one ethnicity, it’s not just football, it’s not just sports, it’s just a tremendous impact and a change, thought-provoking change that has to be responded to.”

Sanders and CU also celebrated the season two world premiere of the Amazon Prime Video docuseries “Coach Prime.” The docuseries, which made its public debut Thursday, provides an inside look at CU Boulder and the school’s football program.

Colorado had a 4-8 record at the end of the 2023 season, which was an improvement over their 1-11 record the previous year.

On Saturday, August 31, the Buffs will open the 2024 campaign at Folsom Field in Boulder, hosting North Dakota State.

Colorado’s non-conference games for the upcoming season are scheduled for September 7 at Nebraska and September 14 at Colorado State.

Utah, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and Cincinnati are CU’s home opponents in 2024. The Buffaloes will travel to play UCF, Texas Tech, Arizona, and Kansas.

For the first time since the 2010 campaign, the Buffs will play in the Big 12 in 2024. The league will consist of 16 teams and will follow CU and other Pac-12 teams Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah.
