Michigan Football: One Player Listed As Top-50 NFL Prospect
ESPN’s Jordan Reid ranked the top 50 prospects in the 2024 NFL draft and one Michigan football player cracked the list.
Michigan has potentially two games remaining in the 2023 football season, but draft experts are starting to really turn their attention to the 2024 NFL draft. There are several candidates from this Wolverines’ football team that have a chance at being drafted in April.
ESPN’s draft analyst Jordan Reid ranked the top 50 prospects in the 2024 NFL draft and one Michigan football player cracked the list.
The lone Wolverines came all the way at No. 33: J.J. McCarthy. Here’s what Reid had to say about McCarthy and his ranking.
McCarthy will be one of the most talked about prospects in this draft cycle. In a Michigan offense that leans on the run and incorporates play-action principles, he has only reached 25 or more passing attempts in 11 of his 26 career starts. Scouts want to see more. That said, McCarthy has displayed ball placement, anticipation and mobility when he has been allowed to throw the ball, outside of an uncharacteristically poor three-interception performance against Bowling Green earlier this year. His 89.2 QBR and 74.2% completion percentage are both top-three numbers in the country.
As we all know, McCarthy is just a junior and has the ability to come back to Ann Arbor for another season. As we’ve talked about in length are the potential variables to McCarthy making that decision.
What does Michigan do in the CFP this season? What are Jim Harbaugh’s plans? What kind of draft grade does McCarthy receive?
Those are just a few of the topics that will be discussed after Michigan’s season comes to a close. But for now, McCarthy can continue to improve his draft stock if he leads the Wolverines to a signature win over Alabama on Jan. 1 at the Rose Bowl.
