Due in large part to the league’s ignorance of the fact that it has altered some regulations to make Brock Purdy the new quarterback paradigm, Purdy does not receive the respect he merits.

One, practice time has been cut so severely that it is nearly hard to develop young quarterbacks in the same way that Bill Walsh developed Steve Young. Trey Lance is an example of how gifted but inexperienced passers cannot grow due to a lack of playing time, either during the season or in the winter. With him, the 49ers were forced to learn the hard way. Luckily, Purdy, who began his four years of college, was also drafted, so by the time he joined the NFL, he was nearly completely developed. The NFL is no longer a developing league, which offers Purdy a significant edge.

Two, Purdy and other young quarterbacks have a significant competitive advantage over veterans due to the rookie salary scale, which has been in place since 2011. Purdy makes less than $1 million each season, but the average veteran starting quarterback earns at least $25 million. Thus, Purdy’s squad has additional salary cap space to bring in more players.

Three, quarterbacks are no longer truly hittable by defenses. They can’t strike them too high, too low, or strike them and then land on them. Purdy was called for 15 yards last week after a defender rushed into him, primarily because of his small stature and the way his hits look. Thus, quarterbacks are no longer need to be large players. Furthermore, they are not required to have powerful arms.
