In the past week, Mathieu Betts, a star pass rusher for the BC Lions, has practiced with two NFL teams.
NFL teams are taking notice of BC Lions defensive lineman Mathieu Betts after he showed up for his second workout in as many days last week. Betts was brought in by the Cleveland Browns on Friday for a workout.
For Betts, the past two seasons have been particularly memorable, and 2023 was his finest year as a professional football player. In all 18 games, he finished with a CFL-high 18 sacks, two special teams tackles, 42 defensive tackles, and four forced fumbles.
Since joining the league in 2019, Betts has been selected to his first CFL All-Star and CFL West All-Star teams. In addition, he received the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award for the league.
With much more playing time, he had his breakthrough in 2022, recording 28 total tackles and seven sacks in 18 games. He played two seasons and made 19 appearances in Edmonton’s inaugural season of his career. In the 2019 CFL Draft, Betts was chosen by Edmonton with the third overall pick.
He was not selected in the NFL draft prior to the CFL, but he did have an opportunity to play for the Chicago Bears. Before the 2019 regular season began, Betts was part of the last roster cuts.
Betts was in for a workout earlier in the week with the Detroit Lions. It seems like Betts will be able to sign with the NFL. In February, he will become a free agent if not. He was ranked No. 2 among the top 30 CFL free agents for 2024 by CFL.ca.
