NBA legend and retired star Eric Montross passed away at age 52.

The late Eric Montross, a former NBA player who was coached by Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina and won a national championship, passed away. 52 was his age.

The Indiana native passed away on Sunday in Chapel Hill, according to a statement from his family that was made public by UNC. He was diagnosed with cancer in March. The institution continued, “His family is grateful for the tremendous support and the truly overwhelming love expressed by so many people as he battled with his signature determination and grace.”

The Boston Celtics selected Montross in the first round of the NBA Draft. The 7-foot center played nine seasons in the league before joining the Dallas Mavericks, Toronto Raptors, and Philadelphia 76ers.
