Gamers Calling for Bru McCoy to Go Back to School
Wide receiver Bru McCoy of the Tennessee Volunteers broke his ankle during the game against South Carolina, and he is currently awaiting word on his football future.
One of Tennessee’s greatest acquisitions through the transfer portal under head coach Josh Heupel has been wide receiver Bru McCoy. Before sustaining a season-ending injury against South Carolina this year, McCoy was off to a great start in 2022, totaling 667 yards and four touchdowns.
McCoy may decide to play professionally or use his last season of eligibility to return to school. In an interview with the media on Thursday afternoon, quarterback Nico Iamaleava discussed his impending start against Iowa and his ideas on what it would mean for him if McCoy returned to the offense.
“My goal is to win Bru back. It’s enormous, dude. We’ll be a little young next year, so just having a guy like that return would be huge for me, and I’m working on it.” He’ll be the receiver room leader, in my opinion.
It will be some time before McCoy has to make up his mind. With the addition of Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley in the 2024 class, the Vols and wide receiver coach Kelsey Pope are confident in their depth at the position. But it would be to everyone’s advantage to have a veteran presence back in that room. When healthy, McCoy provides stability to this offense because of his size and familiarity with Tennessee’s route-tree. In his initial starts, he provided support to quarterback Joe Milton III, and he might do the same for Iamaleava the following season.
