Before the Gator Bowl, Dabo Swinney criticizes the “sad” state of college football.

Over his nearly 30-year career as a college football player and coach, Dabo Swinney has experienced too many memorable bowl games to count.

So when asked Thursday about the current state of the sport’s bowl season—which has been more defined by transfer portal news and opt-outs than by the actual games—the veteran Clemson football coach didn’t hesitate.

In a press conference held prior to the Gator Bowl, Swinney stated, “To be honest, it’s kind of sad to see.” “This is my 29th bowl game as a coach and player combined. I therefore think I have a pretty good perspective on a wide range of roles and experiences. Being a part of a bowl is one of my best memories.”

After a 4-4 start, the No. 22 Tigers take on Kentucky on Friday at Jacksonville’s EverBank Stadium in an attempt to win five straight games—a kind of momentum that could see them through the offseason and into 2024.

But it’s far from all hands on deck for Clemson (8-4, 4-4 ACC). Three All-ACC players—defensive tackle Ruke Orhorhoro, cornerback Nate Wiggins, and linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr.—have chosen not to play in order to focus on their NFL Draft preparation.

Along with six other portal losses, the Tigers also lost starting safety Andrew Mukuba (Texas) and starting wide receiver Beaux Collins (Notre Dame) to the transfer portal. Due to injuries and other factors, Clemson’s depth at several positions, including cornerback, has been affected.
