Medical examiners revealed that former University of Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Sam Bruce passed away from a heart attack earlier this year at the age of 24.

Bruce died on April 28 from acute myocardial infarction brought on by coronary heart disease, according to a report from Florida’s Broward County Medical Examiner that PEOPLE was able to access. The news was initially reported by TMZ.

The night before he passed away, Bruce was in a car accident in Fort Lauderdale, and at first, authorities thought he was having a seizure. Bruce passed away the following morning at a neighboring hospital after paramedics gave him CPR, a Ft. Lauderdale Police Department spokesman told TMZ at the time.

According to the Broward County Medical Examiner, Bruce passed away from “natural” causes, and toxicology findings showed that no substances in his body were involved in his demise.

According to the publication, Bruce was a talented wide receiver at St. Thomas Aquinas High School and later joined the Hurricanes in college. He was subsequently cut in 2016 after breaking several team rules, and he never played for the team, according to WPTV.

Bruce stated that among the infractions from the previous year were nodding off during meetings and failing to board the team bus on the day of the Florida State game. Bruce left the University of Miami last year, according to the Sun-Sentinel, and enrolled at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and later Southeastern University.

Following Bruce’s passing, St. Thomas Aquinas honored him in a tweet

The tweet featured four images of Bruce from his time at the school and stated, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Bruce was also recognized on social media by his high school 7-on-7 squad, the South Florida Express.

“We are devastated to learn of the passing of one of the best players to have ever attended SFE. We will always hold a special place in our hearts for your contagious energy and ability to make others laugh,” the team tweeted. “We spoke with Sam’s family, they just ask you to pray for their family during this time.”

Bruce is the nephew of NFL Hall of Famer Isaac Bruce, who spent two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers after playing for the Los Angeles and St. Louis Rams.
