One of the top picks in the NFL draft the following month, Jalen Carter, a former standout player at Georgia, is accused of reckless driving and racing in relation to an accident that claimed the lives of a recruiting staff member and a teammate.

The Associated Press was able to obtain an arrest warrant from the Athens-Clarke County (Georgia) Police Department on Wednesday. The warrant claims that Carter was racing his 2021 Jeep Trackhawk against the 2021 Ford Expedition, which was being driven by Chandler LeCroy, a recruiting staff member, 24 years old, and that this race resulted in the Jan. 15 wreck.

The announcement was made hours after The Atlanta Journal-Constitution revealed that Carter had witnessed the collision and had subsequently given police conflicting versions of what had happened.

LeCroy, along with Bulldogs offensive tackle Devin Willock, were

killed in an accident that the police first said involved just one vehicle.

According to online records, Carter was arrested on Wednesday at 11:33 p.m. ET for careless driving and racing on highways and streets, both misdemeanors. He was freed at 11:49 p.m. after posting a $4,000 bond. On April 18, there will be an arraignment hearing.

Carter was supposed to be part of a media availability that was set for Wednesday at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. However, a league representative later informed reporters that Carter would not be speaking because he and five other players were still going through physicals.

Carter said he planned to return to Athens in a statement shared on social media on Wednesday afternoon in order to “address the criminal allegations against me and to make

make sure the whole and honest truth is conveyed.”

In his statement, Carter also expressed his expectation of being “fully exonerated of any criminal wrongdoing.”
