Over his career, Al Wilson, a former linebacker for Tennessee, has received numerous honors.

Wilson has had a distinguished career, going from winning a BCS National Championship with the Vols in 1998 to being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2021. Wilson can now include something on his resume that he was not able to before.

The former Vol will be the grand marshal of the 2023 Homecoming parade.

“Being regarded as a grand marshal is an honor,” Wilson stated in an interview with The Daily Beacon. It’s an incredible feeling to know that the university thinks so highly of you, and I’m excited to be here this year. I’m grateful to be a part of it, and I’m excited about everything that follows.

Wilson had a prosperous tenure at Tennessee. From the flawless 13-0 squad that won the first-ever BCS National Championship in 1998, he was the only player to be selected as an All-American. Having totaled 272 tackles during his tenure at Tennessee, he is regarded as one of the best linebackers in Tennessee history.

In the 1999 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos selected him in the first round after he graduated from college. Playing from 1999 to 2006, he was selected to the Pro Bowl five times.

Following the end of his playing career, Wilson relocated to Atlanta. But in his heart, the native of Jackson, Tennessee, will always be a Tri-Star State.

“Probably the best decision I could have ever made,” according to Wilson, was his choice to play for Tennessee.

It’s a pleasant feeling. My blood bleeds orange because I’m a Tennessee guy born and raised,” Wilson remarked. “I simply have a love for the university that many other guys might not.” Thus, I’m just glad to be involved in it.
