Philadelphia, PA Give him the nickname Philly Rob. Give him the nickname Topper.

For at least another two seasons, the Philadelphia Phillies will be able to refer to Rob Thomson as their manager, regardless of his moniker.

After leading the team to two consecutive NL Championship Series appearances, Thomson signed a one-year contract extension with the Phillies that would last through the 2025 campaign.

He served as an interim manager for the most of 2022. Thomson will no longer have to start 2024 as a lame duck.

At the baseball winter meetings on Monday, Thomson remarked, “It’s good to know that you’ve got that extra year, but if I didn’t get it, it probably wouldn’t have bothered me.”

Since Joe Girardi was replaced by veteran bench coach Thomson, 60, on June 3, 2022, the Phillies have a 155-118 record. The Phillies were led by Thomson to the 2022 World Series, but the Houston Astros defeated them in six games. This season, the Phillies made a comeback to the NLCS, but they lost series leads against Arizona in Games 6 and 7 at home, 2-0 and 3-2.
