Robert Lewis Thomson, a Canadian professional baseball manager for the Major League Baseball Philadelphia Phillies, was born on August 16, 1963.
Thomson played for the Detroit Tigers organization from 1985 to 1988, mostly as a third baseman and catcher. After his playing career, Thomson managed the Class A Oneonta Yankees for a year and worked for the New York Yankees for several more years, most notably as Major League Field Coordinator. After that, he was the Yankees’ bench coach in 2008, their third base coach in 2009–2014, and their bench coach once more in 2015–2017.
Thomson was appointed bench coach of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018. Following manager Joe Girardi’s dismissal on June 3, 2022, Thomson was named the Philadelphia Phillies’ interim manager. Thomson was appointed manager full-time on October 10, 2022, following his leadership of the Phillies to their first postseason series victory since 2010. He later led the Phillies to their first pennant in the National League since 2009 in that same year.
