Felton Spencer, a former center for the Utah Jazz, passes away at age 55.

Felton Spencer, a former center for the Utah Jazz who played a key role in the team’s trips to the Western Conference Finals in 1994 and 1996, passed away at the age of 55.

Spencer’s death was announced by Louisville University, his alma mater, on Sunday afternoon.

Spencer played for the Jazz from 1993 to 1996, averaging 7.6 points and 6.7 rebounds. He started 183 of his 184 games played for Utah.

“We are honored by everything he accomplished in his personal and on the court. We shall greatly miss his physical presence; he was a kind, gentle giant. Although we are devastated, your prayers and thoughts bring us comfort,” Spencer’s sister Tammy Pollock posted on Twitter.

Thurl Bailey, a former Jazz center who spent two seasons in Minnesota with Spencer, offered his condolences via Twitter.

“My prayers and condolences are with Felton Spencer’s family. He was a fantastic NBA teammate and friend. gave the team an unrivaled level of toughness and filled everyone around him with love, laughter, and fun. Farewell, Chief!
