Veteran Cooper Mays of Tennessee Explains His Choice to Join the Vols Again in 2024

The significance of Cooper Mays’ return for Josh Heupel’s Tennessee Volunteers in 2024 cannot be overstated.

With four seasons of starting experience at Tennessee, Mays is a vital member of the offensive line for the Vols. The native of Knoxville has made 31 starts during his time in Tennessee and has established himself as the Vols’ starting center. The 2024 season quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s early-season development will also be greatly aided by Mays’ experience.

On December 15, Mays made the social media announcement that he would be returning for the 2024 season, saying he was doing so to “finish what [he] started.” August training camp saw Mays undergo a minor medical procedure, which kept him out of action for the first four games of the 2023 season.

Regarding how the injury affected his decision to make a comeback, Mays stated on Tuesday, “That kind of played into looking at the NFL and everything.” “I believe that being extremely healthy going into the draft process and demonstrating that you can maintain your health for a full year is a huge plus. Thus, that was undoubtedly one aspect of it.

Ultimately, though, Mays’ choice was influenced by his teammates and family.

“You know, my family was the most important thing.” Tuesday, Mays stated. “I have faith that my teammates and my family will support me during this process. This place is amazing. I adore volunteering. There is no better way to complete it than to work hard to do so while present with my brothers.

Cade Mays, a former offensive lineman for Tennessee and an NFL Draft selection, served as Cooper’s sounding board while making his selection.

Regarding his brother, Mays remarked, “Cade is a huge part in kind of everything I do.” “He’s a man who has experienced it firsthand. He advised me to simply decide what I wanted to do. Disconnect from the outside world and follow everyone else’s instructions. Your heart will guide you to your intended location if you stay where you feel comfortable. I believe I’ve figured out where I want to be after giving it a lot of thought and prayer.
