ESPN REPORT: The star player whom with anger slap Shane Flanagan the St George Illawarra Dragons head coach has been suspended from…
Before English rugby league phenomenon Jack Welsby became the latest well-known celebrity to turn down the opportunity to join the St George Illawarra Dragons, Shane Flanagan could see the writing on the wall. Welsby stated on Thursday (AEDT) that he has chosen to stay with St Helens in the UK’s Super League rather than make the transfer to the NRL, dashigning Flanagan’s chances of signing the English Test five-eighth and fullback.
“I’m so happy it’s over with now,” Welsby declared in a press release. “I’m happy I made the choice I did, and I get to spend time with all of my best friends and at a great club. It was a decision I had to make.
Everyone views the NRL as a fierce competition, but I think Super League has the potential to be even more intense. We simply need to put in more effort to get there. For me, it was always going to be St Helens, but occasionally the rumors surrounding the NRL and other things are more complicated than simply signing with a different team.
Having won the previous four grand finals, Welsby claimed to have unresolved business at St Helens after his team was eliminated from the Super League semi-finals this year. “Everyone at St Helens expects to win trophies, whether it’s the fans, the players, the coaches, or the backroom staff,” he stated.
“I want that pressure, even though it can be difficult at times, and that’s where I think I perform at my best when playing rugby (league).” I’d like to win again. I felt that last year was a huge letdown and that the way it ended was a terrible sensation that I don’t want to experience again.”
