One of the greatest “run through a brick wall” quotes in football history was said by Dan Campbell in 2021, just before he started his first season as head coach of the Detroit Lions. NFL coaches typically have a certain way of talking about their work. They give the team’s owner and corporate culture high marks. They discuss how the city has been incredibly friendly thus far. They give an explanation of their future plans. But Campbell went in a different direction.

The new hire sounded more like a college coach who realized he had to speak to a larger audience in order to win over supporters and, consequently, donors. Campbell discussed with football writer Kevin Clark how Michigan was negatively impacted by the housing bubble and the problems facing the auto industry. Campbell claimed, “It hit here, but it hit everywhere.” Then he told the reporter something else he had to admit: the Lions, for all their terribleness, had not exactly turned into a source of inspiration for a region that needed it. “The Lions have been a joke for thirty years and are always the underdog.
