Report: Sheldon Keefe to return as Maple Leafs head coach

Several reports indicate that Sheldon Keefe, the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, will start the 2023–24 season in the bench.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet and Darren Dreger of TSN virtually corroborated general manager Brad Treliving’s decision on Monday, reporting that Keefe’s inclusion marked the start of the search for assistant coach Spencer Carbery’s replacement following his departure for Washington.

“At the end of the day, it validates our long-held suspicion that Keefe is returning,” Friedman stated on the most recent episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast. Though they haven’t made any announcements, he is returning.

Treliving’s hiring, in my opinion, increased the likelihood. For a brief while, I was wondering if the Rangers were waiting for Treliving to come back, but overall, ever since Treliving arrived, I’ve thought Keefe would return, and that will undoubtedly happen.

Dreger claims that the parties had a meeting earlier this month to talk about Keefe’s role and that, as was revealed over the weekend, initial talks about a potential contract extension had started.
