Dave Hakstol is named the inaugural head coach of the Seattle Kraken.

Seattle (AP) — Dave Hakstol was appointed head coach of the Seattle Kraken, an expansion team set to start play this fall, on Thursday.

For his second head job in the NHL, Hakstol will oversee the rookie team. After more than three seasons as the Philadelphia Flyers’ coach from 2015 to 2019, he served as an assistant with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the previous two seasons.

General manager Ron Francis stated, “Dave has a great deal of experience, a strong work ethic, a solid technical understanding of the game, and the remarkable ability to communicate clearly and effectively.” “I’m excited to collaborate with Dave as we work to create a team that our supporters will be proud of.”

Hakstol, 52, led the Flyers to two postseason appearances; however, both of those trips ended in first-round defeats, and he was let go halfway through his fourth season as coach. Like he is for Francis this time, he was an off-the-board hire for Philadelphia general manager Ron Hextall six years ago after serving as an 11-year coach at the University of North Dakota.

Hakstol remarked, “I am honored to be joining this incredible group.” “I was astounded when I first saw the arena. It’s such an unusual location. I’m excited to be a part of the team that develops a team that plays for the city of Seattle with pride, zeal, and selflessness.
