Grizzlies assistant Darko Rajakovic will take over as head coach of the Raptors.

The head coach of the Raptors is a new hire.

ESPN reports that Toronto is selecting Grizzlies assistant Darko Rajakovic to take Nick Nurse’s place.

Before coming to Memphis in 2020, 44-year-old Rajakovic, a native of Serbia, served as an assistant coach for the Thunder and Suns and as head coach in the G League.

Under Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins, Rajakovic—who previously held coaching positions in Serbia and Spain—was promoted to the rank of top assistant.

In NBA history, he will be the second coach to be born in Europe.

Sergio Scariolo, the coach of the Spanish national team and a former Toronto assistant who was also considered for the position, tweeted, “Congrats and good luck to my good friend coach (at) DRajakovic!” “Excellent decision; it’s wonderful to see a European coach get a chance to establish himself as an NBA head coach! I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Raptors for their consideration; it was truly meaningful.
