In 2024, how will the Red Sox manage their infield?

Over the final week of 2021, word spread that the Boston Red Sox had made significant improvements to their farm system. According to Jonathan Mayo of MLB Pipeline, Marcelo Mayer, the fourth overall draft choice in 2021, is credited for the system’s improvement, making them the most improved farm system in baseball.

Shortstop Mayer was drafted by Boston out of high school, and he shot to the top of the organization’s prospect ranking right away. The team that Mayer might play for at Fenway one day will be greatly impacted by the events of the next few years, as his estimated arrival date is 2024. Since infielders make up a large portion of Boston’s top prospects.

The first position that players can move into if needed is third base. Over the course of baseball history, we have seen that many players—A-Rod, Machado, Ripken Jr., and Chipper Jones, to name a few—become excellent third basemen despite being natural shortstops. Rafael Devers of Boston is one such player.

You can be sure that Devers will sign a significant contract after this one. His contract year, 2024, is still a few years away, so there are questions about how the Sox should handle Devers. He will get his pay day because he is a left-handed hitter who can reach all fields with his power. It is entirely up to the Red Sox whether or not they want him to wear their uniform.
