A team needs other teams in order to cover one and win a championship.

The Free Press photography team was there to capture the Michigan football team’s resounding victory over the Washington Huskies in Monday night’s College Football Playoff national championship, from Houston to the streets of Ann Arbor.

Staff photographers Junfu Han and deputy photo editor Melanie Maxwell visited the sidelines of NRG Stadium with large lenses and cameras in order to record all of the Maize and Blue’s touchdowns and takedowns. And a little closer to home, photographers Ryan Garza and Kim Mitchell were at The Brown Jug, a beloved college town hangout, and inside Crisler Center for a student watch party before moving outside as the fun spilled over.

Mitch Albom: “We’re champs!” is Michigan football’s farewell statement after a contentious year.

Almost 250 of the thousands of photos that the photo team took were submitted, and many of them were featured in photo galleries that were posted on freep.com. Those photos unquestionably produce an exhaustive account of the historic game.
