FOXBORO: Bill Belichick is thanking Patriots supporters as he stands down from his position as head coach of the New England Patriots after 24 seasons, during one of the team’s most successful streaks in NFL history.
In The Boston Globe, Belichick placed a full-page advertisement addressed, “To Patriots fans everywhere.” In the commercial, which acknowledges that Belichick has led the Patriots for 24 years, it is said that “you were undaunted by weather, attended scorching hot training camp practices and braved Foxborough’s coldest, wettest, snowiest and windiest days.”
Adding a humorous touch, Belichick said, “You may even have enjoyed my fashion sense and press conferences, or maybe you just tolerated them.” in reference to his well-known taciturn demeanor.
With a sympathetic bow to the supporters, he concluded the message, saying, “I loved coaching here and, together, we experienced some exciting moments.”
With 266 regular-season and 30 postseason victories to his name, the 71-year-old Belichick is by far the most successful player in Patriots history. With 52 regular-season wins, Mike Holovak (1961–68) is ranked second, while Raymond Berry (1984–89) is ranked second with three playoff triumphs.
The most Super Bowl championships ever won by an NFL head coach is Belichick’s six in New England. After Don Shula’s 347 triumphs, he has the second-most wins (347 regular and postseason).
Earlier this year, Belichick interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons and indicated his interest in taking a new coaching position. Raheem Morris was hired by the Falcons to fill the role.
Jerod Mayo has been appointed head coach of the Patriots.
