The best awful team is the Royals.

There is a fairly obvious group of teams that would fall into the bottom tier if the 30 Major League Baseball teams were to be divided into tiers according to the strength of their roster. There are a few top teams, a ton of teams that might be different levels of “average,” and then your bottom teams.

The teams at various stages of rebuilding (or just cheapness in general) make up that bottom tier. That bottom tier is occupied by the Kansas City Royals.

Ten of the teams in FanGraphs’ playoff odds have less than a 10% chance of making it to the postseason. Although you could probably name them off the top of your head, we won’t list them here.

The good news for Kansas City is that the Royals might be the best team among those who would be considered the “worst” in baseball. They also have the best odds of those teams, with an 8.5 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to FanGraphs. They are predicted by PECOTA to win 71.4 games and have a 0.4 percent chance of winning the division.

In addition to having the potential for a mediocre win-loss record, Kansas City’s division is another unfortunate circumstance.
