Could the San Antonio Spurs possibly be any luckier?

The luck of the San Antonio Spurs has been absurd. Nobody would contest that portion of their tale. If not, they wouldn’t be selecting the most sought-after prospect since LeBron James, seven-foot-four French prodigy Victor Wembanyama, as the first pick in the NBA Draft on Thursday.

James was also nineteen when he was selected first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2003 NBA Draft, beginning a career that saw him transform nearly every team he played for into a contender for championships. He shared a victory with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cavaliers and won twice with the Miami Heat.

Because of his exceptional ball-handling abilities, outside shooting touch, defensive agility, and instincts—a combination never seen in a player his size—Wembanyama is deserving of some of that kind of attention. Wembanyama may not put the Spurs in the running for a championship right away, but his arrival drastically alters the team’s course following four straight losing seasons and a sharp decline in home attendance.
