Michigan football hires familiar face, Steve Casula, as tight ends coach

This fall, a well-known face will be seen on the Michigan football sidelines.

Head coach Sherrone Moore formally appointed Steve Casula, a former commentator for the Wolverines (2019–21) during the middle Jim Harbaugh years, as the program’s tight end coach. Under former U-M defensive coordinator Don Brown, Casula served as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UMass for the previous two seasons.

According to a press statement from Moore, “Steve is a smart, versatile, and highly capable coach who works hard to put the players in the best position to succeed.” He’ll be a terrific addition to the offensive staff room and a resource for us when it comes to recruiting. Steve will be a great mentor to our tight ends and will be contributing significantly to other areas of our program. We are happy to have Steve and his family return to the Michigan Football family; they are a terrific asset to our staff.”

The 36-year-old Casula has a long history in Michigan, going back to his days as a tight ends coach (2012) and graduate assistant (2010–2011) at Western Michigan. Subsequently, he was hired as a coordinator for the first time at Division II Davenport (2014–16). After that, he moved to Ferris State (2017–18) as the offensive coordinator and coach of tight ends and full backs.

Casula was regarded as one of former offensive coordinator Josh Gattis’s best analysts while he was in Ann Arbor.

“Casula expressed gratitude to Coach Moore for giving me the chance to return to Ann Arbor and join this amazing staff and team,” the release read. “After three wonderful years in Ann Arbor, my family and I am thrilled to be back and support Michigan Football’s ongoing success.

“With the way this program uses tight ends, this will be an amazing group to lead as we continue to bring in and develop the best candidates for that position.”

On Saturday, January 27, 2024, Sherrone Moore, the new head coach of Michigan, talks in front of family, the media, and faculty members at a press conference held inside the Junge Family Champions Center in Ann Arbor.
After a wave of graduations and NFL declarations, Michigan’s offense will have a lot of new players, but even with AJ Barner gone, the tight end position seems to remain stable. Colston Loveland, a tight end who had 45 receptions, 649 yards, and four touchdowns in a breakout sophomore season, is back for U-M and is one of the best in the country.

This Michigan football team should excel at instructing tight ends because Moore started his coaching career in Ann Arbor. Grant Newsome, the offensive line coach, coached the unit the previous two seasons (2022–2023).

A new defensive line, linebackers, and defensive backs coach is still needed for the Wolverines after Steve Clinkscale chose to depart Ann Arbor to take a job with the Chargers as part of Jim Harbaugh’s staff.

It is also rumored that Wink Martindale, a former defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, will join U-M for the same role. The hiring is expected to happen official next week.
