ESPN NEWS: A Legend steals Patriots coach to join him at Boston College

Coach of tight ends for the New England Patriots job currently unfilled.

He’s not going far, though.

Recently, Bill O’Brien took a position as head coach at Boston College, and as per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the team is attempting to have tight end coach Will Lawing hired by the Patriots to serve as their offensive coordinator.

Devin McCourty responds to Brian Belichick continuing as the Patriots’ head coach for the foreseeable future.

Lawing and O’Brien have collaborated on several projects together. It started in 2013 when Lawing was O’Brien’s head coach at Penn State and he was a graduate assistant.

Together, the two departed in 2014 to join the Houston Texans. Once again, Lawing filled a variety of roles while O’Brien served as head coach. Prior to being the tight ends coach, he served as an offensive assistant, defensive quality control coach, and coach.

Following the 2020 campaign, they moved to Alabama, where Lawing served as an offensive assistant and O’Brien as offensive coordinator. Lawing then took O’Brien’s place as the tight ends coach upon his return to New England.

Therefore, it makes sense that Lawing would once more follow O’Brien.

The new head coach of Boston College took the position on Friday and is assembling his staff quickly.

For the 2024 season, O’Brien had already scheduled to return to his alma mater, Ohio State, to take up the position as offensive coordinator. However, he was unable to turn down the chance to lead the team.

More importantly, he gets to remain in the area.

After four years as head coach at Boston College, Jeff Hafley left to take a position as the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.

O’Brien and Lawing will now assume control.
