ESPN REPORT: A Star Player Explains Why 49ers Weren’t Getting the Ball Back in OT Under Any Circumstances,

It appears much worse now that Kyle Shanahan chose to take the ball on the first drive of overtime in Super Bowl LVIII.

In addition to talking about his team’s title win, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made a shocking statement on Monday night that will only irritate 49ers supporters.

Mahomes stated that San Francisco would not have recovered the ball for a third possession even if the 49ers had scored a touchdown on their first overtime drive. The Chiefs had anticipated that they would have responded with a score of their own, thus their strategy had always been to attempt a two-point convert.

Mahomes responded, “No, we were going for two,” on Monday. “Uncertain if Coach Reid would mind me letting everyone know, but we definitely would have gone for two.”

In the end, the game plan was for nothing since the Chiefs scored the game-winning touchdown on their drive, while the 49ers could only muster a field goal.

Coach Kyle Shanahan came under fire from numerous NFL experts for opting to have the ball first in overtime following the 49ers’ devastating 25–22 Super Bowl defeat.

About his choice, Shanahan said, “We went through the analytics and talked to those guys.” We concluded it would be preferable. Third was how we wanted the ball. We wanted to be the ones with a chance to win if both teams tied and scored.

Mahomes and the Chiefs looked more knowledgeable about the NFL handbook than their rivals, despite rumors that some 49ers players were unaware of the new overtime regulations. It was their preparation—along with one Corn Dog play—that helped Kansas City win its third Super Bowl in the previous five years.
