ESPN REPORT: Another Mega Star Commits To New England Patriots
Bill O’Brien stressed the importance of “home” as he stood in front of media on Thursday to make his debut as the newest head coach of Boston College.
However, O’Brien has been in the area for the past year, if not physically, as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.
It wasn’t all plain sailing, though, as Bailey Zappe replaced quarterback Mac Jones for the final six games, and New England’s attack finished the season ranked No. 31 in scoring and No. 30 in yards.
O’Brien was likewise out of luck when the Patriots fired head coach Bill Belichick four days into the season, forcing the native of Boston to find another position.

As Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, to start. A few weeks later, he switched to Boston College, where, following a disappointing 2023 season in New England, he feels revitalized.
According to WEEI, O’Brien stated on Friday, “This is definitely invigorating relative to what happened last year.
” “Look, it was a difficult year last year. We were not very good offensively. And I say that we. Every single one of us. We simply didn’t perform well enough. We tampered with it too much. We committed far too many careless mistakes.”
After a 4-13 season, O’Brien wished incoming head coach Jerod Mayo and his staff well, stating that they will turn the Patriots around.
New England has struggled to a 29-38 record since Tom Brady left, missing the playoffs three of the last four years.
With Mayo in charge, it’s a new era that O’Brien won’t be a part of, mostly because he chose to let Mayo appoint his own personnel. O’Brien is still in favor of the group, though.
O’Brien remarked, “It was a difficult year, but those things happen.” “I’ve spent 32 years doing this. It hasn’t always been 14-2 or 14-3. There are tougher years than others, and this past year was not easy.
“But there was a bunch of good guys on that team that I enjoyed coaching and I really wish everybody at the Patriots the best.”
Similar to this, O’Brien’s initial stint in New England in 2011 ended after just one season. However, this was due to his acceptance of the head coaching position at Penn State, where he spent two years before taking the helm as head coach of the Houston Texans.
This time, however, O’Brien is on a similar route but in an opposite direction; after failing in New England, he is returning to the collegiate ranks at a less prominent position.
