The Michigan football team that competes in 2024 won’t resemble the one that took home the national title in 2023.

Just six of the 22 Wolverines players who started in their national championship victory over Washington are still on the team: Mason Graham, the defensive tackle, Will Johnson, Tyler Morris, Colston Loveland, the tight end, and the safeties Rod Moore and Keon Sabb.

The Wolverines, who finished 15-0 last season, lost quarterback J.J. McCarthy, All-American running back Blake Corum, leading receiver Roman Wilson, all starting offensive line members, star nickelback Mike Sainrstil, leading tacklers Junior Colson and Michael Barrett, and three starting defensive linemen (Kris Jenkins, Jaylen Harrell, and Braiden McGregor).

Jim Harbaugh left the Michigan Wolverines to take the helm of the Los Angeles Chargers, so they will need to accomplish all of that with a new head coach. They might also have to do it with a completely new set of coordinators; defensive coordinator Jay Harbaugh and special teams coordinator Jesse Minter are anticipated to follow Jim Harbaugh to Los Angeles, while offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore is anticipated to become the new head coach. (Update: On Friday night, Moore was formally announced as Michigan’s new head coach.)

When you combine all of that with a difficult regular-season schedule that includes home games against Texas, USC, and Oregon in addition to road games against Ohio State and Washington, the Michigan Wolverines will have a lot of obstacles to overcome before they can even defend their national championship in the College Football Playoffs, which has expanded to include 12 teams.
