Boston (AP) — On Saturday night, the Boston Bruins easily defeated their bitter rivals the Montreal Canadiens 5-2 thanks to two goals from Trent Frederic and his 500th career assist from Brad Marchand.

Boston, playing the Canadiens for the second time in eight days, exacted some revenge on the team that defeated them 3-2 in overtime last Saturday in Montreal.

The Bruins also scored goals through Charlie McAvoy, James van Riemsdyk, and Pavel Zacha (13-1-2). Last season, Boston set NHL records for points (135) and wins (65).

In the 759th regular-season meeting between the Original Six clubs, the Bruins got off to a quick start on a night when players from the 1970 and 1972 Stanley Cup-winning teams, led by Hall of Famers Bobby Orr and Johnny Bucyk, raised a banner to the rafters.

“It’s unpredictable how the team will perform when there’s a ceremony and a large number of people in the area,” Marchand remarked. “I thought the game was excellent. We owed those guys something, in a way. They laid the groundwork for what we strive to maintain today.
