After serving in the same capacity for four years with the Indiana Hoosiers, Mike Hart—the all-time leading rusher in Michigan history—joined the Wolverines football team as Jim Harbaugh’s running backs coach.
Additionally, he completes the puzzle of Sherrone Moore’s post-Harbaugh coaching team, the new head coach. For weeks, supporters have been curious about the status of Hart, one of the most successful and well-known position coaches in Wolverines history, and his future with the team.
In his “Locked on Wolverines” podcast, veteran Michigan football reporter Isaiah Hole provided an update on Hart’s condition on Tuesday.
For unknown reasons, Hole claims that Hart is presently on a “leave of absence” from the Michigan football coaching staff.
As the conversation revolved around whether or not Moore’s coaching team was complete, Hole provided the update.
Regarding Moore’s new staff, Hole stated, “the only thing we’re really truly waiting on is what happens when Mike Hart comes back from his leave of absence.” Furthermore, I’m not sure if that is a cause for concern or not.
“I’ve been told he’s on a leave of absence.”
Following a health scare, Hart fell on the sidelines of a game against the Hoosiers in Bloomington, Indiana, on October 8, 2022. He spent some time in a local hospital before making a comeback to the sidelines the following week against Penn State.
Later, he developed became the mastermind behind one of the nation’s top rushing attacks, mentoring Michigan teammate Blake Corum to second-team All-American status in 2023.
