On February 6, 2024, at 5:15 p.m. EST, this story was updated with a comment from Showman’s legal representative.
Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the commander of the 5th Ranger Training Battalion at Camp Merrill, Georgia, has been sidelined while an investigation is ongoing.
In response to a question from the Army Times, the Maneuver Center of Excellence public affairs office sent a statement on January 26 stating that Lt. Col. Nathan Showman had been suspended.
The announcement said, “Lt. Col. Bob J. Stone, executive officer of the U.S. Army Infantry School, is serving as interim commander.” “The goal of Camp Merrill is still to run the mountain portion of the U.S. Army Ranger Course, which teaches soldiers climbing skills and gets them ready for leadership roles. Per his chain of command, Showman has been assigned to responsibilities at Fort Moore, Georgia.
The nature of the probe was kept a secret by the authorities.
When contacted by Army Times, Showman’s lawyer, Robert Capovilla, confirmed the investigation and his client’s suspension.
Capovilla stated, “We fully expect [Lt. Col.] Showman to be cleared and put back in command in a fairly short amount of time. “We anticipate a thorough and impartial investigation.”
In April 2023, Showman assumed command of the unit. The mountain portion of Ranger School, which includes small unit operations in steep terrain, is run out of the Dahlonega, Georgia installation. While undertaking combat patrols, students are evaluated.
According to Showman’s official biography, the Cincinnati, Ohio native enrolled in Xavier University’s Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 2005 and was commissioned as an infantry officer.
