In retrospect, Eli Gold said that he suspected something wasn’t right with the way he was being treated by Crimson Tide Sports Network.
He has been removed from the University of Alabama football radio broadcasts less than a year later.
The play-by-play man, seventy years old, joined me on WNSP-FM 105.5’s “The Opening Kickoff” the morning following the announcement that he would no longer be the “Voice of the Crimson Tide.” He described the news as depressing.
He declared, “It was not a happy ending to this relationship.”
Just months ago, something was telling him in his gut.
According to Gold, who said that he has inked a deal with a professional football team that will be unveiled on Friday, “last year when I came back from the cancer and my schedule was cut in half, I was healthy and ready to work, but they didn’t let me travel.” Gold said this to me on Thursday morning. “I sensed something wasn’t right.”
It turns out that he was informed that his contract will not be renewed during a Zoom conversation one week ago today.
He said, “I suggested doing another full season and calling it quits at that point.” “That did not pique their interest. Right now, they desired a change. They weren’t really comfortable having things I wanted to say out in public.
He said that those items weren’t poisonous or hidden mysteries.
With regard to the changes made to the official statement, he remarked, “The first press release said I was retiring.” Yes, I was not going to retire. They were so gracious as to rectify that. “Eli is stepping down,” it said after that. Eli was not going to step down, though. We simply came to a standstill there because I had no say in all of this.
“The written press release did not resemble the one that was released.” I thanked everyone, including the fans. They simply eliminated that. They made the decision for me to skip the A-Day game.
At first, Gold claimed he was given the opportunity to attend the A-Day Game, the Tide’s yearly spring game, where he would have received recognition for his 36 years of dedication. He added that he was given a parking card and football season tickets. He responded by doing one last complete season at that point.
