DENVER — Max Domi is adamant that he and Tyler Bertuzzi, who are teammates with the Toronto Maple Leafs, never panicked even though they didn’t score any goals in January or most of February. They may have cracked a few jokes on their unlucky puck luck.
“You mean that’s all you can do?” Domi shrugged his shoulders and spoke. “You start thinking, ‘Really?’ when you’re hitting a post here and missing an empty net there. When will it be inserted? However, all you can actually do is keep shooting, putting the puck in the goal, and enjoying yourself.
However, Bertuzzi’s pleasure hasn’t always looked like it has, as he entered Saturday’s game with just seven goals over 55 games. The former 30-goal scorer and most significant Leafs offseason signing, signed a one-year contract worth $5.5 million this summer, was expected to relieve some of the output pressure on Toronto’s starting forwards. Just two weeks prior, Bertuzzi’s play was criticized by coach Sheldon Keefe since, at the time, he had not scored a goal in 18 games. The Leafs have long been in dire need of backup scoring.
On February 14, Keefe stated, “As I’ve discussed with him, he’s got to work at his game.” To be really honest, it extends beyond this season and even affected the previous one. He’s not really changing his pace from where he was a season ago. We’ve failed to get Bertuzzi back to within thirty goals, despite your best efforts.
It seemed as though Bertuzzi was under extreme pressure, at least from the outside.
However, Domi maintains that he wasn’t stressed out in the slightest in the changing room with his new linemate and friend.
Domi remarked, “Since the majority of us don’t read the media, anything you guys talk about does not worry us in the slightest.” That roller coaster is not for you to ride. I doubt that Bertuzzi would have known; I was unaware of the conversation surrounding Bertuzzi. There is nothing you can do but support each other as guys in this place.
