As soon as former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell became available, teams like the Cleveland Guardians and New York Mets expressed interest. But the team that came in and took Counsell was none other than the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs’ decision to terminate David Ross in order to hire Counsell was the sole major issue.
Jed Hoyer, president of baseball operations, stated that firing Ross wasn’t a simple choice. Nevertheless, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, Hoyer couldn’t pass up the chance to sign Counsell.
Hoyer remarked, “It just felt like an exceptionally hard decision, but if the opportunity was there, I felt like I had to make it.” There was nothing about this decision that I felt didn’t fit the criteria of winning as many games as possible in the short and long terms, which is my job.
Hoyer remarked, “This is no slight to Rossy, who I have the utmost respect for,” but Craig is the best in the business. Although ranking managers is difficult, he is the best in the business.

During his four years in charge of the Cubs, David Ross amassed a 262-284 record. His best season was in fact 2023, when Chicago won 83 games. Since 2015, Craig Counsell has managed the Brewers. Under Counsell, Milwaukee won at least 82 games in all but three of the seasons, including the 2020 season that was cut short due to COVID-19.
