Milwaukee Brewers: Star Player Talks Starting at 3rd Base and Team’s Incredible Offensive Display in Spring Training Opener

When it comes to young talent, the Milwaukee Brewers are overabundant. This is particularly true in the outfield, where they have promising young players like Jackson Chourio, Garrett Mitchell, Joey Wiemer, and Sal Frelick. Christian Yelich, the previous MVP of the National League, is the only true veteran the Brewers have in the outfield.

Milwaukee decided to have Frelick begin practicing at third base, where the Brewers lack a fixed starter, in an effort to find additional playing time for everyone. Sam Cannon of Sports Illustrated reports that Frelick has not played third base since a run with the Futures Collegiate League’s Northshore Navigators in 2018.

After a few days of practice, manager Pat Murphy made the decision on Saturday to start Frelick at third base. He also started him at first base.

In the first game of the Cactus League, first base prospect Wes Clarke hit two home runs for the Milwaukee Brewers against the San Diego Padres, which they won 11-7. Frelick, for his part, was 2-2 with a run scored, a stolen base, a walk, and a double.

For Frelick, the most noteworthy aspect was that he performed well at third base during his first game action at the hot corner in almost six years. In San Diego’s opening at-bat of the game, Fernando Tatis Jr., the first Padres hitter, singled to third base. Cleanly fielding it, Frelick threw him out.

Later in the game, Frelick also received a high bouncer, which he fielded cleanly. Later, Brock Wilken, a prospect, took his position.

Following the game, Todd Rosiak of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel posted the following video on X, formerly known as Twitter:

It did feel good, yes. Since baseball operates that way, I kind of anticipated the first would come to me. I was therefore prepared for the first one. Fortunately, I had a great, huge hop to assist me get my feet wet. Yes, that was enjoyable.

Though it was undoubtedly different, I still felt butterflies. only during the initial match. but unquestionably distinct. like, really near. Playing in the infield puts you in tight quarters, and many of those players have strong hitting strokes. Thus, just a little bit more focused on each pitch.

Andruw Monasterio started 56 games at third base in 2023 after making his Major League debut with the Brewers the previous season. Milwaukee’s squad lacks a true third baseman aside from him.
