“YOU ARE THE WORSE COACH I EVER MET” Star player disparaging Milwaukee Brewers head coach Pat Murphy.
Manager of the Chicago Cubs Subtly Makes Fun of the Milwaukee Brewers
During the opening Chicago Cubs Spring Training game, Craig Counsell took a jab at the Milwaukee Brewers.
The news that Craig Counsell would be taking over as manager of the Chicago Cubs this offseason was unexpected.
Counsell has met with president of baseball operations David Stearns of the New York Mets, among other organizations, for interviews. When the Cubs quietly signed him to the biggest deal ever for a manager in baseball history, most onlookers were taken aback.
Counsell, who has managed the Milwaukee Brewers since 2015, has a 707-625 career record. Despite the challenges associated with a smaller market team’s payroll, he gave the Brewers everything he had.
Among the best in sports is the rivalry between Chicago and Milwaukee. No matter the sport—football, basketball, or baseball—the people of Milwaukee and Chicago don’t get along.
As a native of Wisconsin, Counsell is aware of this having managed the Brewers for almost ten years. He took advantage of the Cubs’ opening Spring Training game to make a shot at his old team.
“Big crowd on the first day, so there’s no doubt you’re in a different place.”
Counsell’s subtle barb showed that he understood that Chicago baseball fans are among the greatest in the league.
The Cubs were playing the White Sox, of course, and that also contributed to the attendance. The game was won 6-0 by the Cubs.
With Counsell in the Cubs dugout, this spring training opener under David Ross differs slightly from previous years. A number of players, like Cody Bellinger, are still available for free agency, so it’s also unknown if the Cubs will make any further changes in free agency.
Counsell led his previous team to many playoff appearances while without the resources that the Cubs had.
As of right now, Counsell is baseball’s highest-paid manager, complete with perks and responsibilities.
