In the inaugural top-16 early reveal, which was made public on Thursday night, the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee selected South Carolina, Stanford, Ohio State, and Colorado as the top seeds.

Texas, Iowa, NC State, and UCLA would be the No. 2 seeds if the season ended today. Southern California, Virginia Tech, Oregon State, and UConn are ranked three in the nine through sixteenth seeds, while Kansas State, LSU, Indiana, and Louisville are ranked fourth.

All 16 seeds were given area assignments by the committee; South Carolina, the top seed, UCLA, UConn, and Louisville were all included in Albany Regional 1. Stanford, Texas, Oregon State, and Indiana were included in Portland Regional 2. LSU, Ohio State, NC State, and Southern California were in Albany Regional 3. Kansas State, Virginia Tech, Colorado, and Iowa make up Portland Regional 4. The number adjacent to the location of the regional site (e.g., Albany Regional 1) corresponds to the actual seed number of the top seed in that particular regional pod.

“South Carolina was the only obvious choice as the top overall seed in this first reveal,” said Lisa Peterson, senior associate commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference and head of the Division I Women’s Basketball Committee. “The other 15 seeding decisions were a significant challenge.” “There are many important games ahead of schedule for all of the participating teams, so the race is on for teams to provide clarity over the next 32 days before Selection Sunday.”

South Carolina, which is 10-0 in SEC play and 23-0 overall, is currently the only undefeated team in the nation and the top team in the most recent Associated Press Top 25 poll. If South Carolina advances to regional play, they will undoubtedly play in the regional championship on Sunday, March 31, and as the top overall seed, they will play in their regional semifinal game on Friday, March 29.

Stanford was ranked second overall with a record of 22-3 overall and 11-2 in Pac-12 play. The Cardinals, who have won seven of the previous eight games, lead their conference, which consists of five teams in this inaugural top-16 revelation.

Ohio State was ranked third overall with a record of 21-3 overall and 13-1 in Big Ten Conference play. The Buckeyes are unbeaten in the 2024 section of the schedule and are on a 13-game winning streak. Their most recent defeat came on December 30 at the hands of Michigan.

As of right now, Colorado, ranked fourth overall, is 20-4 overall and 10-3 in the Pac-12. The Buffaloes’ best victory of the year was a 71-59 victory over Stanford, the No. 2 seed, at home.

The committee released the first of two top-16 lists on Thursday for the 2023–24 regular season. The other is scheduled to air on ESPN2 on Thursday, February 29 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

The complete 68-team field for the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship will be revealed during the NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Show on Sunday, March 17 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. The top 16 teams revealed during both reveals are unaffected by this.

Four of the teams ranked in the top 16 will once again host the First Four opening-round games of the 2024 tournament on their campuses on March 20–21. The top-16 seeds’ schools will host games in the first and second rounds from March 22–24. Regional play will be held from March 29 to April 1 at the MVP Arena in Albany, New York, and the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon. On March 29 and March 30, respectively, each location will host two regional semifinal games. A regional championship game will also be held at each location on March 31 and April 1. The Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland will host the 2024 NCAA Women’s Final Four on April 5 and 7.
