After defeating Georgia Southern two out of three times in Starkville this past weekend, Mississippi State baseball now has a 4-4 overall record.
Even though the season is still early, Bulldogs head coach Chris Lemonis and his group can still make a lot of improvements to the team if they hope to compete in the SEC this year.
The Diamond Dawgs’ offensive frequently appears to be asleep, and when it does, it’s a little too late. The Bulldogs have a.278 average and a.396 on-base percentage for the season thus far as a unit.

It is evident from previous games, like their midweek sweep of Austin Peay the other week, that the Bulldogs’ offense needs to be improved. If the bats can’t wake up at the appropriate time, things won’t get very good going forward.
Additionally, it appears that Justin Parker, the new pitching coach, has improved the pitching, but work still has to be done, particularly from the bullpen.
Sometimes, particularly in the aforementioned Austin Peay series, the Bulldogs had multiple chances to win the game but were unable to do so. The Bulldogs have had instances of a late-game collapse due to these errors on the mound combined with their offensive woes.
Even so, there is still plenty of opportunity for improvement before the Bulldogs face more challenging opponents because the season is still young. But after eight games, these are the two obvious problems this club has faced.
The Diamond Dawgs’ next game is planned for Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Dudy Noble Field against Jackson State.
