The Green Bay Packers strike up a discussion.
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin: The Green Bay Packers’ coach, Matt LaFleur, is reportedly adding Anthony Perkins to his coaching staff as an assistant defensive backs coach under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, continuing his trend of scrounging through college recruiting to bolster his staff.
Perkins spent the previous two seasons as Oregon State’s cornerbacks coach. In his two seasons, eight defensive backs were named all-Pac-12, according to the school. With 71 passes defensed in 2022 and an additional 63 in 2023, the Beavers topped the conference and qualified for two consecutive bowl games.
Jonathan Smith, the head coach of Oregon State the previous season, has taken the helm at Michigan State. Perkins was the Sun Bowl defensive coordinator when Smith was hired by MSU in November. Trent Bray, the defensive coordinator for 2023, was elevated to the position of full-time head coach and chose to appoint Keith Heyward, the assistant coach for the Raiders, as his coordinator.
From 2019 to 2021, Perkins served as Colorado State’s cornerbacks coach. He assisted the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2017 and 2018, concentrating on defensive backs.
Perkins attended Colorado for his college career from 2007 to 2011. As a three-year starter, he had three interceptions and served as the team captain in his last season. After making waves as a running back, quarterback, and safety, he was named a high school All-American.
Don Perkins, a former running back for the Dallas Cowboys who carried for 6,217 yards in eight seasons and was a six-time Pro Bowler, is the grandfather of Perkins. He totaled 108 yards and one touchdown in the Packers’ 34-27 victory over Dallas in the 1966 NFL Championship Game.
He is a Texas Sports Hall of Famer and a member of the Cowboys Ring of Honor.
Before this year’s Sun Bowl, Don Perkins commented, “What a great career he had as a collegiate player at the University of New Mexico and then getting to play for the Dallas Cowboys for those seasons.” “It was bigger than football for him, in my opinion, and from speaking with many others who knew him personally, the largest influence he made on my life. He was a football player, but it wasn’t his identity. He was a really relational individual who gave to everyone around him, and I believe the legacy he left behind went beyond sport.
It was a legacy of having been a wonderful grandfather, parent, and friend. The greatest influence he left on me, in my opinion, was his ability to use a platform that requires you to invest in and nourish individuals in your immediate vicinity. He was able to use this platform to have an impact that went beyond the game.
Hafley, who had been Boston College’s coach since 2020, is joined on the new staff by defensive line coaches Vince Oghobaase (Boston College), Eddie Gordon (UAB) as an assistant offensive line coach, and Perkins (Oregon State) as an assistant receivers coach.
