After defeating UVA, the Tar Heels rise to the Top 10 in NET.
The home Cavaliers were only 5-of-30 in the first half as North Carolina established a lopsided 10-point lead at the intermission. at the second half, UVA’s shooting began to improve, but the Tar Heels were unstoppable and won 54-44, their first at Charlottesville since February 25, 2012.
A total of 16 shots were made by each of UNC (21-6, 13-3) and UVA (20-8, 11-6) throughout their poor shooting performances. The Cavaliers shot a pitiful 27.6 percent from the field, while North Carolina finished with a 32 percent percentage. Despite the Tar Heels’ dismal shooting performance, Cormac Ryan had another excellent game, leading all scorers with eighteen points after nailing six 3-pointers.
First-place UNC moved up to seventh in the most recent NET rankings with its big victory. Iowa State, ranked eighth, and Creighton, ranked tenth, are projected to have significant runs in the NCAA Tournament, and they are sandwiched around North Carolina.
With their victory yesterday, the Tar Heels—who were slated for a third seed—definitely strengthened their case for a higher seed. UNC may move up the NET and maybe reclaim the top seed in the Big Dance if it can win out and finish the regular season with a sweep of Duke.
