Greetings and welcome to SB Nation Reacts, an MLB fan survey. We pose questions to the nation’s most engaged Milwaukee Brewers supporters throughout the year. To take part in the weekly email surveys, register here.
We asked Brewers fans to rank the team’s offseason and project the team’s home run leader for 2024 in this week’s Brewers Reacts survey.
About half of all supporters (43%) graded the Brewers a “B,” while 31% graded the Crew a “C” during the offseason. An further 10% awarded them a “A,” 14% a “D,” and 2% a “F.” Milwaukee traded for young players in DL Hall and Joey Ortiz and added Rhys Hoskins and Gary Sanchez via free agency, even though those two came at the expense of an ace in Corbin Burnes. Tyrone Taylor, Mark Canha, Adrian Houser, Carlos Santana, and Rowdy Tellez were also lost by the Brewers. All told, the Brewers grew younger, no doubt about it, but did they improve, deteriorate, or mostly remain the same?
Milwaukee should not be surprised by most projections, which call for a slight regression this season given the team’s young. The Brewers still employ the “bites of the apple” strategy, though, and in light of that objective, the front management did a great job of moving Burnes and obtaining manageable prospects before letting him depart the next offseason.
With 56% of the voting, more than half of the fans chose Hoskins to lead the club in home runs. William Contreras received another 16% of the vote, Willy Adames received 12%, Christian Yelich received 9%, and other received 7% of the vote. Among the players on the list, Hoskins possesses the greatest raw power, but as he approaches his 30s and recovers from an ACL tear, his health is a worry. In addition to his impressive 17 home runs in 141 games the previous season, Contreras possesses a ton of raw power—he hit 20 in just 97 games with Atlanta in 2022.
After hitting a career-high 31 home runs in 2022, Adames led the team with 24 in 2023. He’ll want to continue this hot streak in 2024. Yelich, who hit over 40 home runs in 2018 and 2019, experienced some down years before making a slight comeback in 2023 with 19 home runs in 144 games. With 22 home runs in 128 games between Double-A and Triple-A last season, rookie Jackson Chourio is the team’s best “other” option.
