Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (KDKA) – Every season since 1994, Steelers supporters have heard the same voice.
Bill and the Steelers announced his retirement this morning.
“Bill Hillgrove’s contributions to both the Steelers Radio Network and the Steelers organization have spanned nearly three decades that included him serving as our play-by-play announcer for four Super Bowl appearances and countless other memorable games during his tenure,” stated Art Rooney II, president of the Steelers. Since he started working alongside the legendary Myron Cope on the airways in 1994, he has been an integral component of our radio network’s broadcasting to our incredible listeners, but he has also made time to participate in a vast number of special events. Steelers Nation will sincerely miss Bill, but we can’t wait for him and his family to enjoy their retirement.”
When Jack Fleming announced his retirement following the 1993 season, the Steelers started searching for his replacement, and that’s when Hillgrove came forward.
He would go on to become the voice of Pitt basketball and football as well as the Steelers.
“It seems that Dan Rooney decided to go with Hillgrove after hearing a few records. The man we know is him.” Hillgrove remembered.
Hillgrove went on to provide the voice for some of the most memorable events in the Steelers’ past, such as their two Super Bowl victories in Super Bowl XL and XLIII.
Hillgrove is leaving the Steelers after thirty NFL seasons.
He declared that he would continue to call Pitt basketball and football games.
“As to the next chapter of my life, I’ll do Pitt football, and I’ll do Pitt basketball because my brother is the engineer, and we room together on the road,” he stated.
