BREAKING NEWS: McCarron return to the St. Louis Battlehawks
org Last season, quarterback A.J. McCarron of the Buffalo Bills made the XFL his home. He led the league in multiple passing statistics and won MVP.
After inking a contract to rejoin the St. Louis Battlehawks of the recently combined United Football League, the former Alabama quarterback is currently playing spring football once more. Upon joining the XFL, McCarron stated that he wanted to prove to his sons that he was capable of being a starting quarterback. He went on to become one of the greatest players in the league.
The Future of A.J. McCarron’s Career
After guiding Alabama to consecutive national championships, the 33-year-old quarterback came into the NFL with some hype, but he had trouble getting off the ground. He moved around the NFL and played a brief run with the Bills during the 2018 preseason after serving as a backup for the Cincinnati Bengals for numerous seasons.
After McCarron had a shoulder injury and Nathan Peterman emerged victorious, he was dealt to the Oakland Raiders. Initially, McCarron faced competition for the starting spot from youngster Josh Allen. After being benched for Allen two games into the season, Peterman didn’t survive long.
Prior to the 2021 NFL season, McCarron tore his ACL, halting his season. He joined with the Battlehawks for 2023 and led the XFL in a number of statistical categories. In nine games, he threw for 2,150 yards and a league-high 24 touchdowns on 68.8% of his passes completed.
In the team’s season finale on April 22, McCarron threw for 420 yards and six touchdowns, making it one of the league’s most memorable games. Later on, XFL News Hub—one of the few media sites to cover the league exclusively—named him league MVP.
McCarron, A.J.: “I’m Not Done Playing”
With his NFL future in limbo following his 2021 injury, McCarron expressed his want for his three young sons to witness him make his debut. After taking a risk on the XFL, he was able to secure a starting position with the Battlehawks.
“I had to decide whether to wait around to play in the NFL, try to train and travel here and there, or just go play,” the player said. In a 2023 interview with Al.com, McCarron stated. “Hey, I’ve earned enough money in my professional life. I don’t lead an extravagant life, and I have all I could possibly want. I’m going back to simply playing. I adore having fun. The most important thing to me is that I enjoy helping to lead a team and inspiring a group of guys to strive for greatness.”
After games, McCarron would frequently take his sons out on the field to show them his football prowess. He claimed to relish the opportunity to do so.
“I believe I’ve demonstrated my ability to play both consistently and at a high level. After the previous season ended, McCarron remarked, “It’s been awesome to have my kids be a part of this.” He also stated that he would be open to other NFL opportunities should they present themselves.
