So why did McCarron want an early release from his contract with the Bengals in order to negotiate a new deal with the Battlehawks?
“I wanted to return for a long time,” McCarron stated at a press conference on Friday. “It was just organizing a few things and determining what was best for me, along with consulting with other coaches and people I trust in the NFL and this league.” And after that, I don’t care about the money. I consider my lifestyle and abundance of money to be blessings. It’s not about the money because I don’t do insane things and we own and operate several enterprises.
I simply thought I could support his league’s expansion. My children got to see it. For me, it’s a win-win situation since I get to play football and enjoy myself. Really, what more is there for you to desire to do? There are far more individuals who detest getting up and going to work than there are who adore it, even though it’s possible to go to work every day and do something you love. I’m thrilled about it and I adore it.
McCarron is joining a new league again. The USFL and XFL combined to form the United Football League, an eight-team league made up of four USFL and four XFL franchises, since the end of the previous season.
Although the Battlehawks finished with a 7-3 record, which tied for second-best record in the XFL, they were not selected for the four-team playoff field. Even though McCarron threw for 420 yards, six touchdowns, and four two-point conversions in a 53-28 victory over the Orlando Guardians in the regular-season finale, they were eliminated from the postseason due to a tiebreaker based on league position for points scored and points allowed.
“I felt like we were really starting to hit our stride and figure out exactly our identity and what we wanted to be on a per-down basis, especially the way we played that last game against Orlando and really opened up the offense,” McCarron said. “And (offensive coordinator) Bruce (Gradkowski) was unreal, just calling an unbelievable game.” We believed that if we won, we would also be able to regain the defensive leadership of a few important players who had been sidelined by injuries. Hell, that’s just sports. You can’t survive on hypothetical scenarios because neither we nor it materialized.
“But we want to work our tails off to get to that point so we can make a run at it and get into the playoffs, but there is definitely unfinished business.”
However, McCarron sees more in the larger picture than taking home the first UFL title.
“I’ve spoken with many of the executives of the UFL and the XFL this past year,” McCarron remarked. “I believe that having certain people in this league is crucial. I feel like I can contribute to the league’s growth over time in whatever capacity is best for me—as a player, coach, or even both. This is one of the reasons I decided to return.
“The league is crucial because the NFL doesn’t have enough time to develop some athletes the way camp does following the draft and all that. And guys, you know, fall between the cracks? Preseasons are virtually entirely eliminated every year. When the next CBA is introduced, it is most likely going to be reduced once more. It’s something that needs to be successful, and I want that to happen. I was proud of the number of players from our offense that we signed to try out for camp. And that’s something I feel like I can do here, which is help guys display their abilities and then assist them in reaching and, ideally, staying at that objective, so that’s another major aspect of it that I’m proud of.
