NHL Trade Rumors: Insider believes big changes coming for Bears ahead of deadline
Johnson, Jaylon
Jaylon Johnson PARTNER
Ryan Poles stated at the NFL Combine that the Chicago Bears are working toward a long-term contract deal with CB Jaylon Johnson, but that they had to apply the franchise tag to him before to today’s deadline.
Given that the Chicago Bears have applied the franchise tag to Jaylon Johnson, he will probably be a member of the team for a very long time. With a career-high rating from ProFootballFocus and four interceptions throughout the season, Johnson had a Pro Bowl caliber year. For many years, Jaylon Johnson has been a reliable cover cornerback for the Chicago Bears, and he’s probably going to stay in Chicago for a few more seasons.
Through his first four years in the league, Johnson’s main real hindrance to playing at a high level consistently has been chronic ailments. Although Johnson hasn’t played in all 16 or even 17 games this season, opposition quarterbacks who dare not attack him have mostly ignored him in coverage. Tyrique Stevenson, a rookie, was playing at a high level at the same time as Johnson made his debut. The Bears will have three elite cornerbacks who will form the cornerstone of the defense for the next three years in Stevenson, Kyler Gordon, and Josh Allen, the 2022 NFL Draft pick, who are locked down in the slot and boundary CB positions, respectively.
